1,300 Courses Played and Counting: Tonn’s Travels

DGA | Disc Golf Association – The Founding Company of Disc Golf!

Today was a day for milestones, as I became the sixth player in the history of the sport to play at least 1,300 different disc golf courses.  It came at a very unique course called the Isla Vista Peace Course near Santa Barbara, California, which is shoe-horned in between residential areas on several vacant lots.  A short, fun little oasis in the middle of a neighborhood where you will see as many bicycles and longboards as you will see cars, the course will be a memorable one for me.

After Isla Vista, I began my march toward 1,400 courses played.  Playing at Evergreen Open Space, Cachuma Lake (my favorite course on the day, and one of the 2-3 best new courses I have played on this trip), Coyote Point at Lake Casitas, and Rabbit Flats. 81 holes of disc golf on the day, trying to squeeze in as much play as I can before this weekend’s rain.

I actually played well on the day, fighting tired legs from all the “Billy Goat Golf” (climbing up and down lots of steep hills).  Several excellent tee shots with my DGA Hurricanes, Undertows and Pipelines.  Though my best shot of the day came on Hole 1 at Coyote Point.  Only 285 feet, but with a stiff headwind, it made the shot over disc-eating snake country a nail-biter.  Put my tee shot 20 feet right of the basket, then sunk my putt for the deuce.  Hooray!

Magic Number = 696 (1,394 courses played)

About Tonn’s Travels

How it All Got Started: Tonn’s Travels >>
A main purpose of this blog will be to share information, helpful tips and tricks (everything from health and fitness to methods for saving money while you’re our “bagging courses” of your own), and ideas for better, safer course design. But I am also hoping to inspire others with my passion for the sport, via the stories I can share about all of the interesting experiences I have. All of the interesting people I meet. All of the amazing courses I am blessed to have the opportunity to play. If I can inspire even a handful of individuals to get off the couch, get “out of their bubble” or “security blanket” and explore more of this big, beautiful planet we all call home? Then I will consider this effort a success.

About Derek

1,300 Courses Played and Counting: Tonn’s TravelsDerek Tonn is a member of the DGA’s Ambassador Team. His company, Mapformation, LLC, has been DGA’s partner in the development of disc golf tee signage since 2012. The longer our two companies have worked together, and the more Derek has gotten to know all the great folks at DGA the more he has wanted to formally sing the company’s praises. The more he has realized that “Steady” Ed the father of disc golf and the modern-day Frisbee vision for the sport and his company perfectly describes his own interests and priorities related to disc golf, and the more Derek has recently been encouraged to share his story.
